Anti-inflammatory, whole food diets boost healing and decrease pain- proven fact.  After a day of unhealthy eating, Molly gets headaches and Libby feels achy all over.  We know how unhealthy food affects our bodies, but it can be hard to get all that nutrition into our body.  Protein powders are alright, but they often include sweetener to make them palatable.  Here’s a smoothie recipe packed with healthy fat, protein and anti-oxidants.  The original recipe, from Mark Hyman’s 10 day detox recipe sheet on the Dr. Oz show, probably has too many calories if you aren’t going to do the whole detox, but here we’ve adapted it for daily consumption.  The frozen cranberries, coconut oil and almond butter taste so yummy together!  You could easily add a handful of kale or spinach, but if you use a more bitter green like kale, you’ll probably want to substitute half a banana for half of the berries, or it might be too bitter.  You might also take a look at the original recipe and change up the fats, depending on what you have.  I always use almond butter and coconut oil, but the rest changes daily.  Enjoy!!

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 1/2 cup of almond or coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp walnuts
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds or flax seeds
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup cranberries

Add a couple of ice cubes if you like yours extra cold.  Substitute a tablespoon of pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for any of the fats, if desired.  Enjoy!!
