So you want to try Pilates? Fantastic! Welcome! You will LOVE.IT.
But what really is Pilates anyway?
Pilates is a method of exercise (named after its creator, Joseph Pilates) that focuses on working muscles from the inside out rather than the outside in. This means the deepest layers of muscle in the torso (transversus abdominis, pelvic floor, etc) are trained to stabilize the spine and joints while allowing the body to perform movements with more ease. Breathing and specific movement increase mind body connection and awareness. Stott Pilates is a contemporary adaptation, that includes information from modern science, allowing for changes from the traditional exercises. What I have learned through Pilates, I try to apply to all aspects of my life.
Some benefits of Stott Pilates are:
- improves muscle strength and balance
- enhances core strength and flexibility
- better posture
- greater flexibility and mobility
- reduction in general aches and pain
- sports performance enhancement
- allows for modifications for an individuals specific needs
- reduces the likelihood of injury
- complements other exercise programs

What to expect in a class or session:
First of all, I will give you a warning. I will talk. A.LOT. The whole time in fact. There are a lot of cues given to help you connect, feel, and understand the muscles and movements they do. You want to get your moneys worth right? All classes, groups or one on one sessions will first learn the basic principles. These are 5 things that are considered in each exercise.
BREATHING
PELVIC PLACEMENT
RIB CAGE PLACEMENT
SCAPULAR MOVEMENT AND STABILIZATION
HEAD AND CERVICAL PLACEMENT
Sounds complicated but I promise it is not. We will strive to do each exercise with proper form and efficient muscular engagement. The goal is to work smarter, not harder. Get the most out of every movement. If you are in a class, I will ask if anyone has an special considerations that will need modifications. Please speak up. I want you to get the most from class. Also be aware that it is a group setting so everyone’s needs will be considered.
If you are in a small group or one on one session, we will start with a history review and postural analysis. That way I know exactly what I am working with and what to develop for you. If you are a patient here at Breathe, I will have talked with your therapist before our first session. We will have communication back and forth about your progress so please feel free to give us feedback on how you feel.
I am so excited to meet you and start sharing my love of Pilates. My favorite part of my job is seeing a movement or muscular connection “click” in a clients brain and they discover something new their body can do!! I hope to see you in the studio soon!
