Be Brave
This whole having 3 kids and then opening a business while still working full time business is tough! I’ve just finished reading Lean In, by Sheryl Sandburg at the same time we are on the brink of electing our first female president. The efforts of the feminists fighting for women’s rights in the past century are paying off in the world and in my life. I have equal number of friends and clients that stay home and work and thankfully, we are able to make these choices because of the people before us.
So here we are. Getting ready to open a business. My husband told me last week that I was brave. I am opening my own business and that is brave. I make a decision and I do it. I’ve always thought he was the doer in our relationship and I was the idea person, but maybe I am a doer! And I’m brave! I get a little teary even writing about this because I think it was the best, most genuine compliment he has given me. He tells me I am a great mom all the time, but this one I felt in the depths of my gut. I am the luckiest wife.
Partners
In Lean In, there is this whole chapter about how if a mother is going to succeed in the business world, on her terms, she needs a partner at home. A true, 50/50 partner-I’m not sure many women have that, but I do. I have that. A true 50/50 partner in my life and in parenting and in housework who is taking up a LOT of slack while we work to get this business off the ground. He is a feminist too, but maybe wouldn’t call himself that. He is a manager that oversees a department full of women. He understands the needs of mothers and supports them. He supports me. None of this would be happening without Ryan behind me 100%.
So I would like to dedicate my first blog post as a business owner to him. The man who has supported me all the time. Every good relationship has a balance- right? An excellent friend last night whispered to my mom last night that I might be a little uptight (yep ☺- Pitta, for my Ayurveda friends), and he balances me perfectly by going with the flow when I need everything to be just right. Thank you for making this possible, Ryan. I love you like crazy.
