Vulvas Are Unique: What They Are & How They’re Different

“Is that what its supposed to look like down there?”: Your Vulva is Unique to You, So stop stressing!

Did you know that everyone’s vulva looks different? However, many don’t know this, and for some women, the way their vulva looks and may change over time can be a true source of anxiety or concern. It doesn’t have to be!

First off: What the heck is a vulva?

Your vulva includes all parts of the external genitals that you can see if you were to hold a mirror and look. This includes the opening of the vagina , the labia majora (outer lips), the labia minora (inner lips), and the clitoris. All of these parts can vary in shape, the amount of skin or tissue present, color, and even the amount of hair present. Variety from person to person among all of those things is completely normal and ok!

If the way your vulva looks is something you are not comfortable with, it may be worth it to take some time to take a look down there! The more aware you are of YOUR normal, the more comfortable you can be with yourself, as well as being able to detect any true reason for concern.

That being said, any redness, burning, itching, or discomfort associated with a change in what’s “normal” for YOUR vulva is something to pay attention to and may be reason to seek out assistance from your healthcare provider.
